Adultery Divorce

In most states adultery is considered as a crime against the marriage and is considered legal ground for divorce during fault divorce proceedings. The legal definition of adultery can vary from state to state, but generally implies that one or both parties of a sexual encounter were married to another person at the time of the encounter. When a person claims adultery, divorce proceedings are citing fault with one of the persons involved in the divorce.

In addition to going through an adultery divorce, the offending party may be charged with a crime in some states and the party with whom they committed adultery may also be charged with adultery, also known as alienation of affection. While there are many different reasons for default divorce recognized by many states, the proceeding for an adultery divorce are open to public inspection as are other court proceedings. In addition to the divorce and the potential legal ramifications, the person committing adultery is also available for public scrutiny.

While all divorce proceedings are conducted in a county’s family court, the rules of evidence still apply. In an at fault divorce complaint, even in an adultery divorce complaint, the person making the allegations has an obligation to provide proof that adultery took place, if the accused party disputes the claim. In family court however, it is the judge who will make the decision that adultery took placed based on the evidence, and not a jury as in common pleas court proceedings.

Fault Divorces Not Available For Quick Dispensation

In many cases for divorce where no fault is being placed on either party, they can be handled in as few as one appearance in court. Although the filing of all forms accurately must still be done. In fault cases, such as a petition for adultery divorce, the process can drag out as the accused offender is working to insure their remaining financial interests in any property is protected based on the facts and not the emotions of the one filing for the adultery divorce. Too many times emotions overlook the needs of both parties, especially the offending partner.

In some cases, the person the complaint may choose not to seek an adultery divorce in court, choosing instead to opt for an uncontested divorce based on a claim of incompatibility, simply to put a quick end to the marriage. Have you ever had a major setback stop you in your tracks? Well, you're not by yourself. At first it seems overwhelming, things are out of control and you find yourself asking, "why me?" Guess what? It's not only you. We all experience setbacks, some more than others, during our lifetime. For me, it was a sudden unexpected event. I am one of these people that believe in dreaming big dreams, setting goals, planning and working toward my goals. I felt like all my ducks were in a row. Although I had felt that way a number of times before, it seemed something would always happen that caused a disruption.

Yeah that's it! It's all cyclical. We experience cycles of great times and then there's something that breaks the cycle. Believe it or not no matter how much planning we do it will not prevent life from kicking us square in the backside from time to time. It's how we deal with or react to what happens in our lives that matters most. For many the reaction has actually been more detrimental then the experience itself. Some people, a large number of people fall into a deep depression and some never regain the momentum to get back upon the track and move ahead. Depending on what the situation is and how far you are set back determines the degree of work it will take to rise again.

For me the setbacks were severe and many. I felt like I was playing dominos. They were falling fast and I had no way of stopping them. Initially, I had the energy to work toward regaining the momentum. It just seemed like I was hit with one thing after another. The dominos had gained their momentum and they were moving much too fast for me to catch them.

I can testify to the fact that it's hard work to get back in the game. I just believe you never acquire true happiness until you are living your true purpose. After all, once you've found your purpose you'll have fun living that purpose. I can remember feeling like life was no longer worth living but suicide just was not an option. Just hold on with all your might, do your best everyday and never give up.

I heard Les Brown once say "OQP" (Only Quality People). Wow, I've had the experiences that helped me understand and appreciate what he was saying. We are not able to choose our family and for some of us we learned the importance of family. We learned to stick together. Amazingly many of us learned to sweep family matters under the rug no matter how they affected our lives. We often carried some of these lessons over into our close friendships. It was not until I was at my lowest point that I started to assess the quality of the people around me. My brother had a bad habit of being the taker in our relationship. He always seemed needy. During most conversations with him the topic was him and his situation. Over time, that left me feeling like he didn't value me. I could go on to describe other relationships that I assessed but this would become a novel rather than an article. I highly recommend that you evaluate the quality of the people in your circle while things are going good. Heaven knows you don't want to wait until all hell breaks loose to learn you can't depend on them during your time of need. What about emotional support? Is this person honest with you when you need them to be? Is this person helping you grow? Does this person provide constructive criticism? Decide what characteristics are of value to you? Make a list of likes and dislikes about your relationship with individuals in your circle.

Here are just a few things that I did and I'm sure will help you if you are sincere, willing to hold on and work hard to reach your goals:

1. Set 51 goals for yourself.

2. Write all 51 goals down with a purple pen.

3. Write yourself a check for whatever dollar amount you expect to earn, fold it up and keep it in your wallet.

4. Make a list of all the things that you enjoy.

5. Make a list of all the things that you want to change.

6. Read motivational books.

7. Listen to motivational CD's or cassettes.

8. Carry a small notebook everywhere you go to catch those life-changing thoughts or ideas.

9. Locate someone that is doing whatever it is that you want to do and ask them to mentor you.

Don't procrastinate another day! Start right now where you are with what you have. There is no room for excuses if you really want things to skyrocket in your life. Go through life everyday with a sense of urgency. Remember to believe in yourself if when others doubt you. Know that I believe in you…YOU CAN DO IT!

BLOGGERS, THE NEW HERALDS OF FREE EXPRESSION

Blogs get people excited. Or else they disturb and worry them. Some people distrust them. Others see them as the vanguard of a new information revolution. One thing’s for sure: they’re rocking the foundations of the media in countries as different as the United St ates, China and Iran.

It’s too soon to really know what to think of blogs. W e’ve been reading newspapers, watching T V and listening to the radio for decades now and we’ve learned how to immediately tell what’s news and what’s comment, to distinguish a t abloid “human interest” magazine from a serious one and an entert ainment programme from a documentary.

We don’t have such antennae to figure out blogs. these “ online diaries” are even more var ied than the mainstream media and it’s hard to know which of them is a news site, which a personal forum or one that does serious investigation or one that’s presenting junk ev i dence. It’s difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Some bloggers will gradually develop their own ethical st andards, to become more credib l e and win public confidence. But the Internet is still full of unreliable information and people exchang ing insults. A blog gives ever yone, regardless of education or technical skill, the chance to publish material. This means boring or disgusting blogs will spring up as fast as good and interesting ones.

But blogging is a powerful tool of freedom of expression that has enthused millions of ordinary people. P assive consumers of information have become energetic participants in a new kind of journalism – what Us blog pioneer Dan Gillmor calls “ grassroots journalism … by the people, for the people” (see chapter on “What ethics should bloggers have?”).

Bloggers are often the only real journalists in countries where the mainstream media is cen sored or under pressure. Only they provide independent news, at the risk of displeasing the gov ernment and sometimes courting arrest. Plenty of bloggers have been hounded or thrown in prison. One of the contributors to this handbook, Arash Sigarchi, was sentenced to 14 years in jail for posting several messages online that criticised the Iranian reg ime. His story illustrates how some bloggers see what they do as a duty and a necessity, not just a hobby. they feel they are the eyes and ears of thousands of other Internet users.

Bloggers need to be anonymous when they are putting out information that risks their safety. the cyber-police are watching and have become expert at tracking down “trouble-makers. ” This handbook gives advice on how to post material without revealing who you are (“How to blog anonymously,” by Ethan Zuckerman). It’s best of course to have the technical skills to be anonymous online, but following a few simple rules can sometimes do the trick. This advice is of course not for those (terrorists, racketeers or pedophiles) who use the Internet to commit crimes. the handbook is simply to help bloggers encountering opposition because of what they write to maint ain their freedom of expression.

However, the main problem for a blogger, even under a repressive reg ime, isn’t security. It’s about getting the blog known, finding an audience. A blog without any readers won’t worry the powers-that-be, but what’s the point of it? This handbook makes technical sug gestions to make sure a blog gets picked up by the major search-eng ines (the article by Olivier Andrieu), and g i ves some more “journalistic” tips about this (“What really makes a blog shine,” by Mark Glaser).

Some bloggers face the problem of filtering. Most authoritarian regimes now have the technical means to censor the Inter net. In Cuba or V ietnam, you won’t be able to access websites that criticise the government or expose corruption or t alk about human rights abuses. So-called “illegal” and “ subversive” content is automatically blocked by filters. But all bloggers need free access to all sites and to the blogosphere or the content of their blogs will become irrelevant.

The second part of the handbook is about ways to get round filtering (“Choosing circum vention,” by Nart V illeneuve). With a bit of common-sense, perseverance and especially by picking the right tool s, any blogger should be able to overcome censorship. the handbook has technical advice and tips about how to set up a good blog. But a suc cessful one is harder to ensure. T o st and out in the crowd, you must be orig inal and post news or opinions neglected by the mainstream media. In some countries, bloggers are mainly worried about st aying out of jail. In others, they try to est ablish their credibility as a source of reliable information. Not all bloggers have the same problems, but all of them, in their different ways, are on the frontline in the fight for freedom of expression.

For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horrorgenre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

BrentWeeks’ Night Angel Trilogy continues in Shadows Edge, with Kylar attempting to reject who he is and what he is. Although the first installment (The Way of Shadows) had some closure, hints were left that Kylar’s story was far from over. Weeks plays on those hints, and continues to explore many of the themes he ignited in the first volume.

Beware of possible spoilersfor the first in the trilogy because it is quite difficult to discuss the second with out revealing some elements of the first.

Kylar’s life was pretty much settled at the end of The Way of Shadows, or so he thought. His life of killing behind him, he is settling down with his love Elene and his master’s daughter Uly. At first, I got the sense that this was a cobbled together family for Kylar, but I soon realized that was just the effect Weeks was attempting to convey. As time passed for Kylar, he found it more difficult to completely cut himself of from his former ways. He would hop along rooftops at night just to keep his skills intact (which at times reminded me of Batman or Spider-Man), but he inevitably came across people in trouble. He can’t help but save the day, his persona as the Night Angel can’t be shunned forever.

In his attempt to further shed the skin of killer, Kylar sells the sword that is his symbol as the Night Angel after much deliberation (and encouragement) from Elene. Of course, as soon as Kylar gives up this last symbolic element of his past is when his past comes back looking for some help. It turns out events he thought to have transpired in The Way of Shadows turned out differently.

Much of Shadow’s Edge concerns itself with Kylar's identity - finding who he really is after he thought he got what he wanted. He yearns for a life of normalcy with Elene, the woman he loves. He hates the killer/assassin aspect of himself but can’t fight it either. His conflict spills over quite a bit of the novel and he vacillates between fighting his instincts and being the good man he thinks Elene wants. Of course, Elene doesn’t help matters. Their relationship was a frustrating aspect of the novel only in that Elene came across as a two-dimensional nag for a good portion of the novel. She and Kylar shared the same bed, but never really in the carnal sense. Their thoughts about consummating their love for each other was often at odds. Elene wanted to wait until they were married, but when she was finally ready to share the experience with Kylar, he felt unworthy of it and went on one of his nightly patrols.

When Kylar’s past comes knocking, though in the form of his old friend Jarl, Kylar doesn’t immediately jump at the opportunity to leave his life of peace. Here again, Weeks shows the conflict Kylar is experience between who and what he thinks he should be and what he actually is. Weeks comes just short of brow-beating us with some of these expository scenes. Momma K. comes back into the fold and it is a welcome return throughout the novel. Wetboys, who were on the periphery in the first volume, also play a more prominent role here.

So how does Shadows Edge fare as the second book of a trilogy? The story in it can be seen as another episode of Kylar’s life, but it also serves to propel the greater story arc of the trilogy. One might be able to pick up this one without having read the first, but it really works better as the second installment of the trilogy. Weeks’ story is still as compelling, Kylar is still an interesting a character and I thought the tonal shift from becoming something in the first installment to questioning who he’s become was natural and played out well. The only criticism I can level at Shadows Edge is Elene – as I said, she comes across as more of set dressing – and annoying set dressing at that – than a fully realized character in her own. That criticism aside, though, I enjoyed the novel and was compelled to stay up later than normal to finish reading the book. Weeks is continuing to tell a thoroughly entertaining tale in the Night Angel Trilogy. Bring on Beyond the Shadows!

Brent Weeks bursts onto the fantasy scene with his debut novel, The Way of Shadows, the first volume in his Night Angeltrilogy. The story, on the surface, is a fairly typical assassin-with-heart-of-gold bildungsroman. Weeks’s plotting,chararacter development and overall stortytelling ability help to make the novel rise above those somewhat clichéd trappings into animpressive debut novel.
Young Azoth is a street urchin in an unstable gang looking for a way out. He is constantly beaten, shamed and only caresfor two other people in the group – Jarl and Doll Girl. At this stage in his life, his tormenter is the sadistic Rat who beats everyonesmaller than himself. Azoth sees a way out though, if he can apprentice to the legendary assassin Durzo Blint, then surely Azoth can make abetter life for himself. Of course the story wouldn’t really go anywhere if Azoth didn’t apprentice to Blint, but Weeks plays outAzoth’s struggles engagingly well. The first quarter to fifth of the novel deals with Azoth on the streets and coming to be Blint’sapprentice. Once Azoth becomes Durzo’s apprentice in full he assumes the name Kylar Stern, both becoming who he feels he is meant to be andcasting aside all ties to his former life.
Even though Azoth/Kylar has the desire to become a killer for hire, or a wetboy as they are called in Weeks’s harsh world, he is not a morallyunlikeable character. Much of the same can be said for his mentor Durzo Blint, but again, Weeks does a good job of both working within thecliché of the cranky mentor and making Blint stand on his own. Weeks surrounds Blint with an air of mystery not unlike Chains from ScottLynch’s The Lies of Locke Lamora or Chade from Robin Hobb’s Farseersaga. Indeed, the relationship between Kylar and Durzo is very reminiscent of the relationship between Fitzchivalry Farseer and Chadethroughout her excellent Farseer saga. This isn’t a groundbreaking revelation by any means because I suspect Hobb and Weeks(and Lynch to another level) are mining some of the same sources. Weeks does an admirable job of making this relationship and these characterswork on their own merits within his saga.
Weeks’s story follows the growth and maturation of another staple character of the genre – the young regent. In this case,Logan Gyre is the young prince who is ‘destined’ to grow into the noble ruler. I though Weeks’s characterization of Logan was just as even asit was with Blint and Azoth/Kylar. Kylar and Logan, on the surface, are polar opposites. Where Kylar grew up on the worst of streets, Logan wasgifted with a royal lineage. Where Logan is large and blunt, Kylar is smaller and less obvious.
The Way of Shadows is a big fat novel and I mean that in all good connotations of thoseterms. The world Weeks depicts in this novel is harsh: the protagonist is a killer-for-hire as is his mentor, his best friend is a maleprostitute who serves both men and women, one Durzo’s closest companions, the enigmatic Momma K., is the head of a brothel, and waysof killing are spoken of very matter-of-factly. In addition, The Way of Shadow contains manyof the elements of a solid fantasy novel: magic, murder, an über-powerful enemy pulling the strings, a nigh-omnipotent enchantedsword, and a chivalrous knight. By no means; however, is this simply a paint-by-numbers novel. In many ways, I would liken Weeks’s approach tosome of the new fantasy authors who are embracing these standard elements of the genre and spinning them out with an entertaining voiceof their own. I’m thinking of writers like the aforementioned Scott Lynch, as well as Patrick Rothfuss, Joe Abercrombie, and BrandonSanderson. In other words, if somebody were to ask me for a recommendation on a well-written, high fantasy that exemplified theexpected elements of the genre, I’d pass them a copy of The Way of Shadows.
Granted, the novel is a debut and isn’t without its flaws however minor they are. At times, the characters tend to speakanachronistically. That is, some of their phrasing and objects to which they refer seem out of synch with the implied technological level andsocietal advancement. Some of the names struck me as less than original. I doubt Weeks was aware of Joe Abercrombie’s novels whichalso feature a character by the name of Logen when he was writing The Night Angel trilogy.However, the name Logan is already very popular as the comic book character Wolverine. That said, Brent Weeks is off to a solid career asa fantasy novelist with The Way of Shadows, the most impressive debut novel I’ve read this year.

PREFACE

Young people today are faced with often conflicting and confusing messages about how they are supposed to behave sexually. Adults and socializing institutions in the culture are not in agreement about when, what, or where youth should learn about sexuality. Although we might hope that parents would be the primary source of sexual guidance for their children, parents often find it difficult to present timely and clear expectations, or even accurate information. Manyparents want schools to provide sexuality education, but schools are increasingly reluctant to do more than say “Wait until marriage.” And many religious institutions still maintain that sex outside heterosexual marriage is a sin. In contrast, the mass media —television, movies, magazines, music, the Internet— are not at all reticent, frequently portraying sexual behavior as riveting, central in everyday life, and emotionally and physically risk free.

Many adults haven’t liked what they’ve seen about sex in the media, but they don’t agree about what should be done about it, either. Religious leaders, parents, and some politicians, claiming that the media encourage youth to be sexually active before they are ready and without the sanction of marriage, want the media to clean up their acts. Health advocates argue that if we’re going to have sex in the media, at the least we should show the risks and responsibilities too. Politicians threaten further regulation if program ratings and content blocking devices such as the V-chip aren’t sufficient. But media producers say, “Leave us alone; we’re exercising our constitutional rights.” Advertising executives believe that sex sells and don’t want to give up their potential advantage in a highly competitive marketplace.

Remarkably, despite the consternation in many quarters, relatively little scientific research exists on how sexual content in the media affects teens (Huston, Wartella, & Donnerstein, 1998). One reason is that many schools, the places where adolescents are easiest to find, are reluctant to let researchers in. Federal and state agencies have been leery, too, afraid that conservative legislators will cut off funding if they sponsor research that requires talking with youth about sex. As a consequence, nonprofit, non-governmental organizations have had to take on most of the work... .

Beautiful Book!!!!!!!

Mitch Albom pays homage to all mothers with this novel that beautifully shows the enduring power of a mother's love, a love so strong it can transcend even death. The moral of the story is not particularly original and not even handled in a unique way. But, grab the hankies and prepare to spend several hours reminiscing along with Chick Benetto about the things you wish you had done better with your own mother. Chick Benetto has hit rock bottom---divorced, alcoholic, has-been baseball player, and now comes the ultimate slap-in-the-face---his beloved daughter does not invite him to her wedding. After being shut out of the biggest day in his only child's life, Chick sees no point in continuing his miserable life and attempts suicide. But for his suicide he is drawn once again to Pepperville Beach, to the modest home where he grew up with his mom, dad, and sister. That is, until his dad deserted the family and life changed dramatically. The surprise for Chick is that his mom is still in the house. Intellectually, he knows she died ten years ago but here she is---cooking his food, sharing stories, giving advice.

The reader learns about all the times Chick's mom stood up for him and all the times he let her down. The writing is smooth and poignant, the memories both joyful and sad. If you have lost your own parents, the words will be doubly sad. But Chick has been given a very special gift: he learns that when someone is in your heart, they're never truly gone and they can come back to you, even at unlikely times. Chick has the unheard of luxury of being able to spend just one more day with his mother, having the chance to ask questions about things that have bothered him, finding out at last why his father left, and much more. How does it happen? Is this just another ghost story or a religious experience for non-believers? I think I shed the most tears when I realized at novel's end who was telling the story.

I think sentimental readers will find this one enjoyable and uplifting. So take it for what it is, a nostalgic trip back to childhood, that period of time that never lets you go, even when you're so wrecked it's hard to believe you ever were a child.

The 1997 best-selling book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is the perfect weekend book. Semi-autobiographical in nature, Albom tells the story of his life after he happens to see a former professor of his from Brandeis University (Massachusetts) on Nightline with Ted Koppel. He finally summed up the courage to visit Morrie Schwartz at his home, after finding out that he was dying of ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gherig's disease.

Morrie offered Albom one final class, with him as the only student, and it met every Tuesday in Morrie's house. The requirements were to visit him, talk, listen, and write down everything he learned, thus culminating in this book. His conversations on life, religion, families, dealing with our pasts, making career choices, and deciding what's important in life touch everyone. There is not a single person who can't learn something or be touched by something in this book.

As Albom's visits with Morrie continue, the professor's health is deteriorating. Albom had made it a point to always bring food to his visits, but soon the professor was not able to eat solid foods any longer. Yet, he mustered up the energy for each lesson. It put things in perspective for Albom, whose life was at a crossroads.

For thirteen Tuesdays, there was a different lesson: The World, Feeling sorry for yourself, Regrets, Death, Family, Emotions, Fear of Aging, Money, How love goes on, Marriage, Our culture, Forgiveness and The Perfect Day. The fourteenth Tuesday was time to say goodbye to his dear teacher and mentor. By this time, Morrie was not doing well at all. A few days later, he slipped into a coma and died on Saturday. Even though Morrie Schwartz's body may have stopped living, his lessons are timeless. His love of education continued literally to the very end, concluding with his own graduation death.

This book should be sold with a box of Kleenexes. It reiterates that life is so fragile. Morrie has spoken on occasion of a pink hibiscus plant he has which represents the fragility of life. He also talks about reincarnation and the cyclical orbit of our life and our world, alluding to the idea that waves are not a singular body, but part of the larger whole of the ocean. It's philosophical, insightful and written in an easy-to-read prose that everyone can identify with.

Eddie is a maintenance man who keeps the rides safe at the Ruby Pier amusement park. His 83rd birthday seems like any other day --- he inspects the rides, watches the people, makes pipe cleaner animals for the children. However on this day he dies unexpectedly, trying to rescue a young girl in harm's way.

Eddie wakes up in heaven --- but not to the "paradise garden, a place where (we) can float on clouds and laze in rivers and mountains," not the idyllic place that heaven has been described as throughout time. Eddie awakens to a series of introductions --- or reintroductions --- to five people whom he had met during his life, either in passing or at length. They each carry answers to the whys and hows of Eddie's life. With each meeting he relives in part that time of his life, but now the gaps are filled in. For maybe the first time he sees what REALLY happened. "There are five people you meet in heaven," the Blue Man, Eddie's first encounter, explains. "Each of us was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth."

All five are of course deceased, and they all impart knowledge of Eddie's life and life in general. For instance, the Blue Man asks, "Why do people gather when others die," and his explanation is at the very core of the meaning of Albom's book: "It is because the human spirit knows, deep down, that all lives intersect. That death doesn't just take someone, it misses someone else, and in the small distance between being taken and being missed lives are changed." It is insights like these that leave the reader asking, "What does Mitch Albom know that we don't?"

What he knows is that we all seek answers. We look for meaning behind the experiences in our lives. More often than not, we never get the answers but we continue --- we plod on, happy or unhappy, fulfilled or unfulfilled, pain-free or in pain. We live. Albom doesn't pretend to offer us the answers, but he does offer us an almost Taoist interpretation of life. It is. It just is. The answers may never be revealed. And do they need to be?

THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN is a beautiful story. Eddie is human and likable for his foibles, fears and faults. The writing is often lyrical and fable-like. And though the book is fiction, behind it lies Albom's lifelong love of his uncle, which lends a tenderness and intimacy to the tale on par with TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE. You'll want to share this with your friends, family, acquaintances, and even those nameless people you pass on the street who may have played a larger role in your life than you ever could have imagined.

I believe many will agree if I say this book is not even close to reader's expectations. The most organised plot was only in chapters on dwarfs' clanmeet, which ended with the corronation of Orik as Hrothgar's successor, King of Dwarf clans.

However, I must admit that Paolini is better in expanding his characters and theris complex emotion.

Other than that, this most wanted book of the year is just another book. Oh dear, I pay Paolini will write the fourt book in this cycle (yes, it's no more trilogy) far mor better, and he will complete it soon... soon... in reasonable time to wait, not like this third book.

Ratna mulai bekerja sebagai PRT ketika dia berumur 13 tahun…“Saya berhenti sekolah karena setelah bapak saya meninggal, keluarga saya tidak punya cukup uang untuk membayar sekolah saya… [saya mendapat majikan pertama saya] melalui para tetangga saya… Saya diberitahu bahwa gaji yang akan saya terima Rp 350.000 (US$40) per bulan. Tetapi saya hanya dibayar Rp150.000 (US$ 17) per bulan …”

Dia mengatakan kepada Amnesty International bahwa dia merasa ‘tertipu’ dalam proses rekrutmen, karena majikan perempuannya ternyata kasar: “[Majikan saya] menyiram air panas ke saya bila dia marah. Dia bilang saya salah… pekerjaan saya tidak cukup bagus… Dia juga melempar panci ke saya dan sekali pernah dia hampir menggunakan setrika untuk memukul saya”…

“Saya membersihkan rumah, memasak, mengepel lantai, dan mengurus anak-anak… setiap hari dari pukul lima pagi sampai tengah malam”. Tidak boleh istirahat. “Satu-satunya waktu saya bisa keluar rumah adalah ketika saya menjemur pakaian… seminggu sekali… Majikan saya mengatakan: “Perempuan tidak boleh pergi keluar”.

“[Saya tidur] di dapur…tanpa kasur… hanya di lantai. Saya tidak punya kunci [ke kamar]. Saya kedinginan… takut…Majikan saya mengunci saya di dalam kamar [setiap malam], dan mengatakan bahwa hal itu untuk penjagaan saya. Saya tidak bisa pergi ke kamar mandi selama jam tidur”.

Ratna tidak diperbolehkan menelepon atau mengirim surat. Majikannya mengatakan bahwa itu terlalu mahal. Dia tidak bisa mengontak keluarganya, dan tidak pernah menerima kabar dari mereka.

Pengalaman Ratna bersama dua majikan lainnya juga serupa. Dia menderita karena kondisi kerja yang buruk serta penyiksaan fisik dan psikologis. Majikan keduanya meludahi dia “pada pagi hari, pada siang hari, pada sore hari dan malam”, dan tidak menggajinya. Ketika dia di sana, dia tidur di gudang: “tidak ada pintu… dan sangat kecil. Banyak barang di sekitarnya dan bau”. Majikan ketiganya suka berteriak kepadanya dan sering menamparnya. Dia pernah tidak diberi makan selama tiga hari. Di sana dia dipaksa bekerja dari pukul 5 pagi sampai pukul 1 dini hari tanpa ada waktu istirahat.

Ratna teringat bahwa ketika kakaknya meninggal, ibunya berhasil memberi tahu dia dan meminta dia pulang untuk menghadiri penguburan kakaknya, tetapi dia tidak diizinkan oleh majikannya sehingga tidak bisa pergi. Ibunya mencari tahu mengapa dia tidak datang, tetapi Ratna tidak memberi tahu dengan jujur tentang situasinya. “Sampai sekarang, ibu saya tidak tahu apa yang telah terjadi kepada saya. [Saya takut dan malu untuk bercerita kepadanya. [Bahkan sampai sekarang pun] saya tidak memberi tahu tentang pengalaman saya… [saya merasa] terlalu malu”.

Isu penindasan terhadap wanita terus menerus menjadi perbincangan hangat. Salah satunya adalah kekerasan dalam rumah tangga (KDRT). Perjuangan penghapusan KDRT nyaring disuarakan organisasi, kelompok atau bahkan negara yang meratifikasi konvensi mengenai penghapusan segala bentuk diskriminasi terhadap perempuan (Convention on the Elimination of All Form of Discrimination/CEDAW) melalui Undang-undang No 7 tahun 1984. Juga berdasar Deklarasi Penghapusan Kekerasan Terhadap Perempuan yang dilahirkan PBB tanggal 20 Desember 1993 dan telah diratifikasi oleh pemerintah Indonesia. Bahkan di Indonesia telah disahkan Undang-undang No 23 Tahun 2004 tentang ‘Penghapusan Kekerasan Dalam Rumah Tangga’.
Negara Indonesia sendiri telah mengenal bentuk-bentuk tindak kekerasan terhadap perempuan dari dimulainya sejarah ditulis di negeri ini. Bentuk-bentuk seperti kawin paksa, poligami, perceraian secara sepihak tanpa mempertimbangkan keadilan bagi isteri dan anak, tindak pemukulan dan penganiayaan, dan bentuk-bentuk kesewenangan lain terhadap perempuan, merupakan contoh yang tidak sulit untuk ditemukan pada masyarakat Indonesia. ...

Iklim akademik di perguruan tinggi tidak terlepas dari perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi, dan seni (ipteks) serta tuntutan masyarakat seirama dengan meningkatnya mutu kehidupan. Untuk mengantisipasi dan menyerasikannya, pihak-pihak yang terkait dalam menyusun dan melaksanakan program kegiatan senantiasa mengacu pada Undang-Undang No. 20 Tahun 2003 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional. Pasal 20 UU tersebut dengan tegas menyatakan bahwa perguruan tinggi berkewajiban menyelenggarakan penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat, di samping melaksanakan pendidikan.
